Barbara E. Katz graduated from the City University of New York School of Law in 1992. She was licensed by the State of Georgia and admitted to the Georgia Supreme Court, the Georgia Court of Appeals and the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals that same year.
Ms. Katz is a family lawyer whose practice emphasizes adoptions, assisted reproductive technology law, wills and estate planning, and domestic partnership issues. After working as an associate for a few years, Ms. Katz formed the partnership of Mackinson & Katz, Attorneys at Law. In 1998, Ms. Katz opened her solo practice, from which she formed a professional corporation in 2004.
Ms. Katz is a member of the American Bar Association and the Stonewall Bar Association of Georgia. She is also a Fellow in the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys, and a Charter Fellow in the Georgia Council of Adoption Lawyers.

In addition to her practice, Ms. Katz is a teacher who instructs students in the law. Ms. Katz taught Legal Writing, Research & Advocacy at Emory University School of Law from 1998-2004; she also taught and administered a bar review course offered through Georgia State University School of Law from 1994-2006. Finally, Ms. Katz is a private tutor and offers a bar review course for students taking the Georgia Bar Exam. (See bar preparation page)
